To me, open-mindedness is the ability to consider other peoples opinions and views against an objective background, without using any prejudicides or quick and 'convient' conclusions.

What you experienced seems like the 'old hag', or sleep paralysis to me, yes. After what I've heard, when you're in the SP state, you can use that to induce a lucid dream, if you just manage to relax ...
