Im not an expert but what you're describing sounds like the hypnogogia state. Ive experience something similar during all my lucid dreams when I use the WBTB/WILD method.

I always use WBTB and WILD. I am still a newbie but WILD seems to be the only technique that works for me.....along with WBTB.

I agree with Tggtt but instead of medication, try some "dream teas" or relaxing herbs. I meditate for 15 minutes and it makes a WORLD of difference.
