My phone service provider (Virgin) seems to block downloads that are not from their shop. Otherwise I would be a phone IRC addict.

I still IRC on my Palm PDA though siiw

I have a RAZR so I don't know if I have the IRC capabilities. If it did I think it would cost me some money. Service is T-Mobile.

If it supports J2ME it should work. If you can download games on it, yes. I think the RAZR does.

Now the problem is how much it would cost. It depends on how much using the Internet costs you.

The good thing about IRC though is that it is a low-overhead protocol, so it shouldn't cost too much data to chat for a couple of hours.
So if you can choose between a data-based and a time-based internetsubscription plan for your phone, I would go for the data-based one.
In about 1.5 months I've send 206KB and received 1426KB on mine and I use my phone IRC quite a lot; just ask Siw

I'll add another IRC client for Windows Mobile to the list now btw, zsIRC!

As of today, I registered the domain zsIRC.com for the zsIRC project. Currently it is redirecting to the original website, but soon it will function as a normal alternative url for this very nice mobile IRC client!
Original post updated with the new url.

As my old Nokia gave up the signal, i bought Sony Ericsson W715. I chose between Nokia E63 and W715, but W715 looked more hand-friendly smile What i needed was mobile with wifi connection, because mobile internet gets too costly.

So, as i don't have any op system in my phone, i'm looking for the best java based irc program. I found jmIrc (http://jmirc.sourceforge.net/). It's pretty good, but big minus is that when i want to type a text, it doesn't type in the channel, but opens "notepad", so i cannot see what someone says while i'm typing my message.

Any suggestions about better irc program? smile

Thanks!

Hi Cyrus, welcome to the Mobile IRC Addicts wink5

You could try UtaIRC (which is also called jmIRC-m and seems to be an updated fork of jmirc.)

I'm not quite sure if it supports typing in the same window (you could ask Siiw who uses the application), but I'm quite sure that that is more a limitation of Java MIDP itself.

I can confirm that utairc also opens the notepad. It is far less buggy than other java clients i have tried, though.

Personally I use wlirc2, it uses midp v2 i believe to get around the limitation and allow you to type text whilst still viewing the channel. It also supports ssl. The major downside is its buggy. Settings menu works but I would avoid using some features, the shortcuts text option is broken for me and locks the app up if you try to use it. The basic functionality is ok. It does show notices on all windows, and i believe there is a crash bug related to pming and recieving a message at the same time although it hasn't happened to me yet. Oh and the vibration on message feature stops when charging, but I think that's a phone feature rather than a bug. Sounds also don't work for me and if you use /me it gets garbled for other people. They get *GreenDragon /me does something.
