LD4all Forum Guidelines - Read this First!
PostPosted: Sat 08 Feb, 2003  Reply with quote

Welcome to the LD4all forum!

To keep the high standard of this forum we -the moderators- have set some basic guidelines. We ask you to read, understand and respect them.
Even if you have been a long time visitor please read this post, there might be some new stuff in there for you too.

1. FORUM SLANG DEFINITIONS:
thread: a forum discussion.
topic: the title of a thread.
bumping:adding a meaningless reply to a topic so it 'bumps' to the top of the page as a recent discussion.
troll:a deliberate insulting or demeaning post to generate as many as possible replies and flames
flame:a personally aimed very insulting post.

you might also notice words in caps, like WILD. These are acronyms that have to do with lucid dreaming. If you move your mouse over these, you will see the meaning behind it.

YOUR PROFILE
Upon registering on the forum, you have several options to express your individuality. There are some restrictions though.

Your username
Please choose an appropriate username.
This rule has been added after offensive usernames in the past Please use no words in your username that you wouldn't use in a polite conversation. (No cursewords, or words that can be considered offensive). Also no drug references.
Please refrain from using ALL CAPS in your username.

It is not allowed to have multiple user accounts.
If you want to change your username you can easily do that by going to your profile and type your new name.

No impersonating
It is not allowed to impersonate another member by taking on the same profile and avatar.

your signature
Please use no more than 4 lines in your signature.
That means 4 separate lines:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Links in sig
Links in sigs are allowed ONLY within the forum.
For example: links to your DJ, favourite topics, etc.
All other links in sigs are not allowed.
To make it clear: this means no mention of outside URL's as well.

You can link to your own website in your profile.
Furthermore we have the "BIG my website topic", where you can put a link to your own site.
note: the spam rules will apply (eg: no links to a site that is made to make money, or draw customers, gain credits, gain referrals, in what form or shape, links to illegal, warez, violent or sexual content.)
Links that the mods feel are not allowed can be removed without warning.

See also the avatar and sig guidelines topic.

BEHAVIOURAL GUIDELINES
Yes, even here we have them.

Respect each other
This forum is a rapidly growing community with members from all over the world. We ask you to respect your fellow travellers on the road to lucidity.
Keep in mind that not everybody has English as a first language.
Opinions can clash and because typed text is such a bare way of communicating misunderstandings can arise easily.
Also, please bear in mind that everybody is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions, so try to keep a friendly and open-minded attitude at all times.

Respect each other's religion and spiritual views on life.
Do not flame a religion or bash believers.
Do not post with the intention of converting people to your system of beliefs.
This also goes for content of signatures!

If you at any time feel harassed by another member (either by PM, in the forum, the chatroom, etc) please do not hesitate to contact a global moderator about this.

Respect privacy
Don't post PM's in the forum where everybody can read it. This is very disrespectful towards the person who sent you it. If he/she wanted to have it public he/she wouldn't have made it a PM.

This goes for quoting chatlogs on the forum as well. Unless you have permission from the person(s) you cannot post a chatlog on the forum. Note, this doesn't go for wolfgame, if you are playing in wolfgame, everything you say can be used against you ebil

Keep it legal and civilized
It is not allowed to post links to copyrighted material, warez, downloads etc. It is equally not allowed to ask for or recommend places where you can download these things.
Please refrain from posting explicit sexual content, extremely violent and/or tasteless posts.

Drug related posts are also not allowed. This includes comments in dream journals.
This is because drugs and LD have nothing to do with each other, and since some people want to become lucid so bad, it could incite them to try drugs in the hope of getting a LD, which is absolutely not the goal of this site. Therefore we have strict rules about drug related posts. It has been ugly in the past, so this rule had to be added. Also, every post about drugs tended to end up in a very heavy pro and against drugs discussion.

If you want to discuss a substance in relation to LD's it is only allowed if it is safe, legal and freely available.
Posts that the mods decide cross these borders will be removed and the poster warned.

no spam
Spam is promoting your or someone else's stuff, whether it is commercial or non-profit.
A topic that the mods consider spam will be removed without notice. If you persist posting the same message this can result in a ban.

Example of subjects that are considered spam and will directly be removed:
  • promoting your own (or someone elses) site or product
  • Asking people to gather material for your site / speech / project
  • Announcing you have a novadreamer for sale on ebay (or you have seen one for sale)
  • Asking for people to participate in research / polls, etc (exceptions can be made for research projects related to lucid dreaming. It is advisable that you then start an experiment in the Lab forum)
  • Asking people to participate in interviews/articles/reports
  • Asking people to write a review / asking for feedback about your own site/product.
  • Asking people to vote, rate a page, to join a tribe or help getting an i-pod

If you would like to let people know about your own website you can put a link in your profile or post in the BIG "my website" topic in the gathering. (known members only, read the first post in the topic).

exception If you have to do a poll or Questionnaire for a school project (not LD related) ask permission of one of the Gathering Mods

It's equally not allowed to put spam messages in your signature, or to use an URL as your username or in your avatar.

Link policy
Please don't post URL's or direct links to product vendors. If you want to discuss something related to LD's then please keep it general and don't place a link to a site where you can order the product.

no flaming
Flaming is not tolerated. Period. This goes for PM's as well as forum posts. If you feel harassed by a forum member please do not hesitate to contact a moderator.

no bumping
Bumping a topic is considered BSP (blatant self promotion) and it is annoying when you expect something new in a topic when instead it is a meaningness reply.

please comply
Please comply with all the rules and don't argue with the mod (privately or publicly) that asks you to follow them. This will only lead to a faster ban.

3 strikes and you're out
If a Mod has to give you 3 warnings, you are banned. No exceptions. Temporary bans may be placed for minor offenses. Though a major offense may lead to a permanent ban with no warning.

After 3 months of good behavior a previous warning is waived and you have a clean slate again. (This means 6 months for 2 warnings).

======

2.BEFORE POSTING A NEW TOPIC
use the search button (it isn't there just for good looks)
If you have a question about lucid dreaming, there is a big chance it has already been asked here and answered.
Search through this forum for earlier discussions on the same topic, using the search function. (If you have trouble finding it: it is right above you in the menu - the big yellow button.

English only
This is an international community, to keep the open atmosphere and the "4 all" spirit, we ask you to post in the forum's language, which is English. If you do post something in another language, please always provide a translation.

read first, ask questions later
Read through the rest of this site (click on Home or the LD4all logo to enter the main LD4all site. It has answers to many common questions about lucid dreaming.

Look for existing threads before posting
If there is a recent discussion that relates to you posting, post it there instead of making a new topic. It is always better to add to an earlier discussion about the same topic than making a new discussion. If you do start a new topic when there is already a discussion about the same subject your topic will be locked or removed by the moderators.
For this reason we have the BIG topics. There are several of them, and always as a sticky on top of the forum.

=====

3. POSTING YOUR MESSAGE

pick the right forum for your post
Make sure you post your topic in the correct sub-forum. If you are not used to this forum, please read through all the sub-forum descriptions before deciding which sub-forum to post on. If you accidentally posted something in the wrong forum the topic will be moved to the proper category. Please don't repost the same topic in another subforum.

use a clear title
Please, make a clear and easy-to-understand topic title which tells what the topic actually is about. Avoid titles like “i need help” or “I'm new here” or "read this!". If your title isn't clear, a mod can decide to change it.

don't overdo it
it is very annoying TO READ A TEXT ALL IN CAPS or with a lot of EXCLAMATION MARKS!!! or too much...................................,,,,,,,,,, or too little punctuation.
also, try to keep it down on the smilies a little. overspannen spinning help! huh crazy2
It is annoying to see one long line of different smilies at the end of a post, or more smilies than words.
Try to hold down a little on the l33t - we already know LD4all PWNZORZ wink5

Quote sparingly
Do not quote the whole previous post and then add a 1 sentence reply of your own. If you must quote, only quote the relevant parts of the post you are replying to.

no chatspeak - put some content in your post
With chatspeak we mean posts that consists of only one smiley, a "me too" comment, or "i agree", or an otherwise quite useless comment like "oh yeah, i believe that too" or "i have that all the time".

With chatspeak we also mean one line conversations in a forum topic. Please use the chatroom or an instant messenger if you'd like to chat with someone.

Chatspeak posts will be removed without notice by the moderators.

don't crosspost
Please post your message in only one forum. Don't put the same message in different forums. Double posts will be removed.

don't post big pictures directly
Apart from the Photo Gallery and the art topics in the Fruits of Lucidity section, it's not allowed to post big pictures directly. Instead, it's advised to refer to the corresponding url.

=====

4. HELP KEEP THIS FORUM CLEAN
Although they come very close, the moderators cannot read every single post on the forum.
And although everybody has read the forum rules, not everybody remembers them the moment they want to ask a question or post a topic rolleyes
Of course this will never happen to you, and there are things you can do to point out the error in the ways of the ones who temporarily have forgotten the forum guidelines.

double discussions
If you notice somebody has started a thread about a subject that already runs somewhere, and you know has been answered several times or has its own BIG topic, reply to the newly started topic with the url of the already existing topic. One of the mods will then lock the topic.

=====

Who Are Those Mods You Keep Talking About?
Mods means moderators. They are here to look after the forum. They can move, delete, and (un)lock topics. The mods discuss their actions in a special moderator forum. Generally they are very friendly, but if you decide to break the rules they can be very strict.

LD4all has 2 kinds of mods:

Global Mods
Aka LD4all mods. They have magic mod powers all around the forum, but take care of several subforums. If you have a question, please approach the mod of that specific forum.

In order of (re)appearance:

Moogle moogle
Siiw siiw
Ysim ysim
GreenDragon dragon
mattias
Bruno oh maan
Sandra :sandra:

Local Mods
Local mods take care of one subforum. They only have magic mod powers in their respective subforums.

Rhewin (Quest for Lucidity)

and last but not least:
pasQuale, founder, creator and admin of LD4all.

=====

THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
That's it.
We wish you a pleasant stay and hope to see you again and again smile

slight clearification on the external links in sig rule:

Quote:
Links in sig

Links in sigs are allowed ONLY within the forum.
For example: links to your DJ, favourite topics, etc.

All other links in sigs are not allowed.

I have updated the rules a bit with more explanation.

an addition about the no drugs rule:

Quote:
Drug related posts are also not allowed. This includes comments in dream journals.

This is because drugs and LD have nothing to do with each other, and since some people want to become lucid so bad, it could incite them to try drugs in the hope of getting a LD, which is absolutely not the goal of this site. Therefore we have strict rules about drug related posts. It has been ugly in the past, so this rule had to be added. Also, every post about drugs tended to end up in a very heavy pro and against drugs discussion.

If you want to discuss a substance in relation to LD's it is only allowed if it is safe, legal and freely available.

and a better explanation what is considered spam:

Quote:
no spam
Spam is promoting your someone else's stuff, wether it is commercial or non-profit.

A topic that the mods consider spam will be removed without warning. If you persist posting the same message this can result in a ban.

example of subjects that are considered spam and will directly be removed:
  • promoting your own site or product
  • Asking peope to gather material for your site / speech / project
  • Announcing you have a novadreamer for sale on ebay
  • Asking for people to participate in research / polls, etc (exception is the lucid lab - start an experiment)

It's equally not allowed to put spam messages in your signature, or to use an URL as your username.

I added this now:

Quote:

Also, please bear in mind that everybody is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions, so try to keep a friendly and open-minded attitude at all times.

Respect each other's religion and spiritual views on life.
Do not flame a religion or bash believers.
Do not post with the intention of converting people to your system of beliefs.

Another addition, added some more explanation to several subjects:

Quote:

Please comply with all the rules and don't argue with the mod that ask you to follow them.

please do not complain publicly on the forum about a decision from the moderators. You can PM the moderator or the admin if you disagree with something.

If you have constructive feedback or suggestions about something you are welcome to post about it in the feedback forum.

These rules are here for a reason, and they change when such a change is deemed necessary. Remember, you are in someone elses home and therefore you are asked to follow the houserules.

3 strikes and you're out
If a Mod has to give you 3 warnings, you are banned. No exceptions. Temporary bans may be placed for minor offenses. Though a major offense may lead to a permanent ban with no warning.

After 3 months of good behaviour a previous warning is waived and you have a clean slate again. (This means 6 months for 2 warnings).
