the Big Webhosting Quest

Seems to be very hard to get a really good host I see :bored: . I am searching for a host myself, experimenting with sites and I really want to get rid of Lycos :grrr: . Bad news midphase is not as expected, and if I read your experiences all those promising hosts seem to be as bad as Lycos concerning support  . And good support is a must since I don’t want to wait for a month again to get a useless response about their non-functioning “ready-to-use” interactive forms like with Lycos  .

I will concentrate on finding a really really neutral host-ranking site. If I find something promising will inform you…

Yeah, good support is a must for me too. PLEASE keep me informed too.

Ah I wish I can view that url… my network at college blocked that url cuz it says that it has some porn there?

eh, yeah, i deleted that post since i discovered at second sight it had a list for hosting companies specialized in adult hosting :shy:

Oh LOL!

That’s really funny!

I don’t know too much about webhosting but I thought this might be a good site.

fuitadnet.com/

It says the bronze package is 4.99 a month ($60 a year) and you get 3 gigs of hardspace and a 25 gig monthly bandwidth. It might not be suitable for you needs pasQuale but just thought I’d make a suggestion.

What about mesopia.com ?

I tested their support system as well and the response time is excellent (they have live support system as well).

They do backup daily. I think it should be what you need at a good price. Only $7.95 a month for Premium Hosting Plan there.

I might move my website there because I have that “Aha!” feeling, but I just want to make sure. I’ll wait.

What do you think?

Oh I forgot… this web hosting I mentioned is proud of 89.2% uptime for five months… I am pretty impressed with that.

Most of web hosting only say 99% uptime PER MONTH. Or something similar to that. You know what I’m saying?

And this web hosting company has good ping too… they’re connected at a high speed connection so no one should have any problems with it.

What do you think?

DM7, you mean 99,2% I hope?

It looks all great, DM7. I can only think of one possible risk: mesopia is the new name for Terabite Hosting and Terabite only exist since march 2003. So they are starters and it looks they still have to face the big test, i.e. a growing amount of customers asking space, bandwidth and support. The market seems to be extremely competitive and new cheap hosts appear everyday, and it is a know fact that most of them don’t survive their first year. Most of them start with really good intentions but when a lot of people sign up because of the cheap prices they can’t live up to their promises…

I did a huge amount of research this weekend, one eye focused on Tour de France and the other on my computer screen  . I visited a lot of host ranking sites and read a lot of reviews, wandered through hosting forums, and this is my conclusion: it’s a jungle! Pure survival of the fittest. So I want to play it as secure as possible and my conditions are not only a cheap and good support but also being established. This means existing for a few years, having a lot of customers and still being popular for their service. For now I only see 2 candidates:

  1. lunarpages.com
    $7.95/month for 20GB/month and 500MB of space.
Lunarpages exist since 2000, and score high in many reviews. Everybody seems to be euphoric about there support so I guess they’re not bad in this respect. They also have a huge support forum:
    lunarforums.com/forum/

  2. ipowerweb.com
    $7.95/month for 30GB/month and 500MB of webspace.
Ipowerweb exists since 1998 and still growing (over 120000 customers). Very serious guys there it seems. Talk about being established! Nr1 in many reviews. BTW no adult allowed there  . Didn’t encounter anything negative about their support, so they are not bad I think. My favourite at this time.

Didn’t found another yet which matches my criteria… Hope you know more candidates!

LOL that was a long post but I have not much here to do at work

hmm mesopia is real quick, as soon as you are on their site for more than 10 seconds their sales rep will initiate a chat with you.

i have to check them out better to know. I agree with brainhacker about establishment.

I know ipowerweb and lunarpages. Prob with them they either don’t allow unlimited subdomains (which i want) or multiple domain hosting, or only offer 1 mysql db. And i think i’ll need more with dutch and english forum, and in the future i want to use more phpbased things so 1 db will not be enough.

and i don’t know if 100.000 users is a plus… you get lost in the masses. How many users they put on a server, etc.

plus, they only offer one plan. If ld4all needs more than 20gb data (which it will eventually) i’ll have to move.

I can see what you mean Q. You can get those extra’s (DBs, subdomains etc) only if you pay, I guess this way they try to recuperate some money. Ipowerweb offers 3 mySQL-dbs but you have to add $10 if you want an extra DB or a subdomain… Don’t really need the extra’s, no plans for a forum or subdomains, so I have it easier .

The problem is I don’t trust the small and young competitors who promise they give everything for one insanely low price because companies need profits and when they attract too much people they are overwhelmed. A huge and growing amount of users is the ultimate test for such a host and most of them die in the jungle. So I look for host with a lot of users AND good reputation concerning support, and those I’ve mentioned are the two remaining. Lycos is the example of a big host where you’re just a number and you can wait forever for support. If you find another established one that gives all you want for one price inform us…

brainhacker, maybe globat is something for you then?

www.globat.com
1000mb space
50gb data
$90 yearly, $7.50 monthly

other ones i put on my list but decided against, but maybe something for you…

www.hostforweb.com
www.sh.com
www.hostrocket.com
www.fuseblast.com
www.hostreflex.com

Globat: was on my list but this changed my mind:
10-cheapwebhosting.com/hosts … addons.php
especially the search engine submission $99 fee
Ipowerweb submits your site on hunderds of search engines for free and also offers other free site marketing tools, another reason why it’s high on my list.

I also checked Hostrocket, fairly established, but I throwed it from my list but I don’t remember why, probably a bunch of complaining users.

Didn’t check the rest so I will, thanks for the list pasQuale

BTW not really established but third on my list after Ipowerweb and Lunarpages:
surpasshosting.com
Especially because of this:
findmyhosting.com/showrating.asp?id=5080

surpass sounds to good to be true. i wonder what their connection speed is and if they do daily backups as well.

[edit] hmm read through their support forums a bit and they mention system crashes a lot  either from ddos attacks or scripts being run from their servers.

Seems they didn’t “surpass” really well after all

grin brainhacker

dutch webhost lists + forum with experiences

www.webhosters.nl
www.webhostingtalk.nl

Ha ha ha ha ha! That’s really funny!

Yeah, some are too expensive for me… I’d like stable company too, but… I am cheap… I’m on tight budget, but I want to get a lot out from a cheap price. You know what I’m saying by the way?

By the way, the more I think about mesopia.com the more I realize that it’s not a good idea to go there because of 98.2% uptime past 5 months. I’d like something that can be up as possible as it can be… 99.9% or something. You know what I’m saying?

So… should we cancel that out of our list?

I checked totalchoicehosting.com/ and it seems to be a good place to start with. Excellent uptime… 99.589% uptime since 1/30/2003… past three months it have been up 100%.

What do you think?

Please help me out! Thanks.

dm7, it sounds very good, for me it doesn’t “feel” good but if it does for you, go ahead

maybe you could check out the www.webhostingtalk.com forums and read around a bit, there you can also ask hosting questions (eg what about the uptime of totalchoicehosting.com)

Yes I know, otherwise I would also just look for one of the many premiumservices that give you everything for $20 and more /month  . I just look for a compromise: cheap ($7.95/month) and stable. Ipowerweb and Lunarpages seem to be the only ones around that are cheap and established (with a good reputation). I think they can only do this because you have to pay for some of the extra’s (add-on domains, subdomains, more than 1 or 3 mySQL-db’s…) - that’s not funny but it’s the price you pay for stability. Just invest what you need - how many of the extra’s do you really need. If you really need it and can’t pay additional fees - take the risk you’re willing to take.

Not much to do at work, so I’ll continue the search and report my findings  . LOL soon we can start our own site about good and bad hosts  .

BTW found very helpful guidelines on this page:
Judging a Web Host
